So I went to see Public Enemies last night.
Public Enemy No.1
It was ok. But I’m not quite sure it deserves the reviews that it’s been getting. Sure, it’s Michael Mann on form, but it ain’t a patch on Heat.
Johnny Depp inevitably plays, Johnny Depp. Christian Bale plays, Christian Bale. The only actor that really stretched herself was Marion Cotilliard. She plays a vunerable and slightly naive girlfriend with aplomb.
It’s shot in a pretty raw and frantic style, which was something that I wasn’t expecting. The Ultra High-Def does not work for me, and would somebody please do something about the sound? Loud and quiet in all the wrong places. I’m not the only one who had that problem, right Rick
.
Yes, the action is quite something at times. There’s plenty of car chases and shoot outs, but I really couldn’t help but feel that the movie was saggy in parts. From the first scene, things feel a little wooden. It was too long and really died a death mid-way through, with a very unsatisfactory end.
Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed. It’s not bad cinema, but I expected better.
